Why should I study Computing?
The continuing growth in the computer and software industries in Ireland and abroad has lead to exceptional demand for graduates at all levels within these disciplines. There is a national and international shortage of well qualified computer professionals. This shortfall will persist for the foreseeable future, due to the increasing role of computer and software systems in all aspects of business, commerce and industry. The proposed award is designed to meet this anticipated shortage of computer professionals.
Course Overview
The Edexcel Higher National Diploma in Computing is an internationally recognised academic qualification designed to meet the exacting requirements of modern organisations. The learning outcomes of this course will prepare students for positions of responsibility in a wide variety of business, service, and industrial enterprises. Effective learning is achieved by a balance of lectures, laboratory/practical work, tutorial and private study periods. Assessment of students’ work is monitored regularly by means of bi-annual assignments in each module. Students are not required to sit any formal examination.

This course prepares you for employment as a computing professional both with specialist computing companies and in general organisations. Graduates can expect to find employment in a wide range of specialist and more general areas including: C++ programming, Java programming, Multimedia, Web Design, e-Business, Network Management and many more. Students who complete the HND in Computing can expect to obtain employment as technical experts in the very high demand area of advanced technology.
Transfer Opportunities
The modules for this course have been designed to prepare student for employment in network management, system programming, application programming, PC support, hardware development/installation, website development, expert systems and object-oriented programme development. The Edexcel Higher National Diploma offers a progression route to the second or third year of a degree or honours degree programme in Computer Science.

Entry Requirements
- The minimum entry requirements for entry to the Higher National Diploma in Computing are 5 passes at Leaving Certificate or equivalent.
- Mature applicants (over 21 on 1st January of year of entry to programme) do not have to compete with school leavers in terms of academic achievement, provided they can demonstrate from their work/life experiences that they are able to pursue and profit from their chosen programme.
- EU students should apply directly to our admissions office for the Higher National Diploma programme.
- Non-EU applicants should apply directly to the college for this course. The acceptability of their qualifications will be determined by the academic board.
