About UsPortobello House – The History
The main building on our campus, Portobello House, was built by the Grand Canal Company as a hotel, with work beginning in 1805 and the hotel officially opening on July 13, 1807.
“The Grand Canal Hotel, Portobello, is a very fine edifice, situated on the banks of the Grand Canal opposite the pleasant village of Rathmines. It has in front a very handsome portico, and the interior is fitted up with great elegance for the accommodation of families and single gentlemen. The beauty and salubrity of the situation, enlivened by the daily arrival and departure of the canal boats render it a truly delightful residence.”
- Extract from “Guide Book of Dublin” published in 1821 by John McGregor
By 1898 the building became a Private Nursing Home. This Institution became important in Dublin and witnessed the birth of many celebrated Irishmen and the work of well known medical men and women. The painter Jack B Yeats lived here for many years. Portobello House features in the writings of James Joyce and Samuel Beckett.
Portobello House – Now
Portobello House is now home to the Administrative and Academic function of Portobello College. Richmond House and Harbour House, housing the college’s lecture theatre, classrooms, IT Laboratories and Library, are situated in close proximity.
The college’s enviable location, on the peaceful banks of the canal, yet within 10 minutes’ walk of St. Stephen’s Green, provides a wonderful backdrop for all students attending the college.
The city centre can also be accessed speedily as all the college’s buildings lie adjacent to several city centre bus routes and Portobello House is also only three minutes’ walk to the nearest ‘Charlemont Bridge’ stop of the Luas.
